Positive Thinking Going Into the New Year

Here we are in 2009 and it is a great time to do some reflection. Each year people around the world, according to custom, will begin the New Year with some form of resolution. They generally are more positive and happy to have come through the last year and have survived certain situations.

Because of the economic crisis many people feel they are lucky to have survived at all. Many people lost things and others have been able to maintain but everyone is happier to have come through it.

As we embark on a new time we have to think about those things that we want to do in the coming year. It is a time of reflection, but it should also be a time of deciding what you want and looking for the details as to how to get moving.

By now everyone has seen or heard about the movie, "The Secret" and there are many people working the principles. Basically it says that you can have what you want by making the decision to have it and then visualizing it into existence. Here are some ideas for what you can do in this coming year:

Setting Goals

Most people start out by making specific goals and this is a great way to get started. Your goals should be reachable though and everyone has a different way of looking at what this means. As an example, some people have goals for their personal life or for their work. If you are going to set goals though, try setting them on all levels.

Do you have some spiritual things you want to learn more about so you can do them better? Are there opportunities that you thought about dealing with but changed your mind? It's time to think about all of these things and get started working on some.

Consider Coaching

Although we might consider coaching as something that goes along with athletes, in the last ten or so years coaching has become a buzzword for different ways to help people. If you have a tendency to get started on things then fizzle out, you might consider hiring a coach. Whether it is a business, career or life coach, they can get you started on the right track and keep you going. This is a person who can act as mentor and business partner as you move forward on your goals.

Consider Professional Development

Are there areas in your career that you want to do better? Is there training that you have put off in the last year? Usually staring the year off with new training is fun and you are more refreshed to start something new.

Professional development may not be the only thing interesting to you so think about areas that might be fun to explore. There are community education classes at community colleges or recreation centers that offer classes on many different topics. Do a Google search for any topic to see what you can find.

Network with Others for More Ideas

Maybe you haven't quite decided what it is that you want to do next so talking to other people might give you clues. Talk to people about what they are doing in the New Year to see if you can find something to stimulate your thinking. Networking is not only good for your business but it is good for your personal life too. You never know when a conversation with someone will stimulate your interest in one area or another.

Be Prepared to Learn New Things

Whether you learn from books or you learn for life stay open to learning more things in 2009. This will create new possibilities that may be interesting. If you come to something that may seem a little out of your comfort zone, try it anyway. It may be a life changing experience or it may be something fun that you have never had the courage to try in the past.

The sky is the limit on what anyone wants to do today. Many will make a decision, figure out how to go after it and achieve their goal. Others might wait until the end of this year to make new decisions and try them out. What will you choose?
